Setting the stage for a successful campaign.

Embarking on a campaign is a significant undertaking for any organization. Whether you aim to fund a new facility, endowment, or a major project, careful planning is essential for success.
Define Your Objectives
Clearly articulate the purpose of the campaign. Specific, impactful outcomes will guide your efforts and inspire your donors.
Craft Your Case for Support
Your case for support is a compelling narrative that explains why the campaign is necessary, how it will benefit the community, and why donors should contribute. Use stories, data, and visuals to make your case persuasive and relatable.
Conduct a Study
A campaign study, typically conducted by an independent third-party, assesses your organization's readiness and the likelihood of reaching your financial goals. It involves interviewing key stakeholders, potential donors, and community leaders. This study will help you gauge support, identify potential challenges, and refine your objectives.
Develop a Campaign Plan
Create a comprehensive plan outlining your overall strategy, timeline, budget, and communication tactics. Define roles and responsibilities, set milestones, and establish a clear process for tracking progress.
Identify and Cultivate Major Donors
Major gifts will form the backbone of your campaign. Using the results of your study and internal data, identify potential major donors and develop personalized cultivation plans. Building strong relationships and demonstrating the impact of their contributions is key to securing these significant gifts.
Assemble a Leadership Team
A strong leadership team is crucial. This team should include board members, staff, donors, and volunteers with a passion for your cause and the ability to influence others. Priority should be given to recruiting those who have the ability to open doors to significant donors. Their commitment and energy will drive the campaign forward.
Launch the Quiet Phase
Before going public, launch a quiet phase where you secure major gifts and commitments from key supporters using a top down/inside approach. Those closest to your organization and those with the greatest capacity are the first priority for face-to-face conversations with the right people asking for the right amount at the right time. This phase builds momentum and demonstrates early success, which will encourage broader community support during the public phase.
Launch the Public Phase
Once a sizable portion, 70-80%, of your goal is secured, launch the public phase. Use events, media, and marketing to reach a wider audience. Engage your community, celebrate milestones, and maintain transparency about progress and challenges.
Maintain Momentum and Engagement
Keep the excitement alive throughout the campaign. Regular updates, recognition of donors, active social media efforts, and community events will keep your supporters engaged and motivated. Celebrate successes and acknowledge contributions publicly.
Conclude and Celebrate
As you near your goal, plan a campaign conclusion celebration. Recognize and thank donors, volunteers, and everyone involved. Share the impact of their contributions and outline the next steps for your organization.
Post-Campaign Stewardship
After the campaign, it is essential to continue nurturing relationships with donors. Provide updates on how their contributions are making a difference and show ongoing gratitude. Strong stewardship will lay the foundation for future fundraising efforts.
By following these steps and maintaining a clear, strategic approach, your organization can successfully plan and execute a campaign that achieves your goals and strengthens your community.
Alliance Philanthropy’s philosophy is to inspire staff, volunteers, and board members for all types of not-for-profit organizations to raise funds enthusiastically and passionately - at maximum levels - in support of their mission.
